I am speaking now not only as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor but also as a fellow human. To be perfectly honest, I wish I had known how to express my emotions the first 20 years of my life. In my line of work, I meet a lot of people who spent their childhoods unseen, unheard, with bad feelings buried deep inside. No two stories are identical, but our responses are the same. It is common for everyday issues to be ignored because we do not learn how to talk about them or take action to address them. Your life didn't have to be tragic for you to feel as though your emotional life didn't matter to anyone, but you. I have spent the past 30 years researching and learning about emotions, perceptions, and change. It has become my passion and my life's work. My goal is to use the power of emotions, beliefs and perceptions to create lives worth living.
“Staying with a negative experience past the point that’s useful is like running laps in Hell: You dig the track a little deeper in your brain each time you go around it.” Dr Rick Hanson
I have a BA in Psychology & Sociology and a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology. I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). I am also a professional member of Ontario Association of Mental Health. I love to write and express my creative nature. I am a published author of four collaborative books: Manifestations ~ True Stories of Bringing The Imagined into Reality; The Grateful Soul ~ The Art and Practice of Gratitude; The Courageous Heart~ Finding Strength in Difficult Times. In December 2022, I co-authored and published Returning To Real ~Embracing The We in Me.
I use a holistic healing approach when working with my clients to help them heal from difficult experiences and negative limiting beliefs, to grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I created the Raw, Risky and Real™ approach which is an intuitive model used to describe the process of moving from wounds to wellness and returning to real. This mindful approach guides you to engage in body sensations, emotions, and beliefs, to recognize your raw spots, and thus ascertain which of the subpersonalities you default to when you need to escape the pain of your wounds, experience high pressure situations, or feel highly stressed. Using this framework is like healing a wound from the inside out. My sessions are person centered and utilize a Compassionate Inquiry Approach with Mindfulness, Somatic Experiencing, Processing Parts (IFS), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques.
I am also a wife, mother to three adult daughters, and grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren. I wholeheartedly understand parental guilt and I have journeyed through the difficult experience of divorce. I believe during the most challenging times in our lives, we have the opportunity to fully embrace what matters. It seems wild to imagine that we can create something better in life simply by changing our perception, but it does happen. If you want to reflect deeper meaning in your life, let me be your guide. My message for everyone is the same: if we can learn to identify our values, emotions, beliefs and perceptions, even the most challenging ones, we can use this knowledge to help us create positive, satisfying lives. My promise to you is that together - we will get raw, risky and real.
I have a wealth of experience in mental health and addictions treatment. I provide psychotherapy for both those struggling with addiction and those trying to support them. In addition, I have expertise in working with adult children of alcoholic/substance users and the impact that parental addiction has on adult children. Other issues I work with include stress/burnout, people pleasing, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, divorce recovery, grief and childhood trauma. I also like to work with athletes with performance anxiety, stress, motivation and discipline mindsets and strategies. I work with individuals looking to improve their self-worth, those focusing on personal growth/life balance, and those looking to build their communication skills such as boundary setting and assertiveness in their lives. I also specialize in narcissistic abuse recovery.
Every person is a unique and creative being, thus your experience with me will be a collaborative approach that resonates with your specific needs, life challenges and goals. The inner awareness, reflection, knowingness, practical skills, and empowering strategies you will develop can enable you to experience new perceptions with truly meaningful benefits.
For more information on my history, intention and goals, you can listen to this podcast interview with Suzanne Harmony at Harmony Helps.
Other life roles and activities I enjoy are running marathons, curling, writing, travelling and spending time with my husband, children and grandchildren.
